Meeting Notes – October 4, 2010

by Clara on October 14, 2010

It’s a long time between meetings when there are five Wednesdays in a month,  which was the case with September. We had a lively meeting with several newcomers.

We also welcomed back Katherine and wished her well for her recovery from surgery.

As usual, Katherine started the meeting by reading summary of guidelines for how we run our meetings.

Next we went around the circle to complete the introductions. Everyone was invited to answer the following questions: (It’s OK to pass.)

  1. Your first name
  2. Your diagnosis
  3. Your mood on a scale of 1 to 10 (bad to good)
  4. What do you do to take care of yourself?

Surprising answer to rate your mood: “I have a fluctuating desire to live.”

We are trying something new to help people socialize outside the meetings. B invited anyone who might be interested to come at 6:00 for DIY Yoga. Many members recommend yoga as a way to take care of yourself. The suggestion is that doing some yoga stretches before the meeting would be fun.

Katherine gave a pep talk encouraging people to contribute to our website. We still have a lot of content to input from our old website and lots of new material as well. Our webmaster handed out fliers giving people the information on how to contribute.

Question Bag Discussion

We stayed in one large group to answer the questions in the Question Bag.

The subjects brought up included:

  • Deep inside I feel like I’m waiting for something really important but I don’t know what it is. What are you waiting for?
  • How do you handle parents or relatives who want to deny your illness and not talk about it ever?
  • I feel like my language abilities sometimes prevent me from expressing my emotions.  On the other hand, when I have the language capacity, my emotions are elusive. Do you experience this?
  • What’s your Halloween costume?
  • Many people in history I relate to came to a bad end. How do you think about historical figures with mental illness?
  • Why do you find your life is important?
  • Why do people who have destructive lives appeal to you?
  • Are you comfortable with your age? How has your age effected your appearance?

The meeting ended with going around the circle sharing something good or neutral that happened to you during the week.

Someone brought cookies and refreshments. All were invited to stay after the meeting to socialize.
