From time to time we invite speakers to address our group at our regular Wednesday night meetings.

October 20, 2010 – Mood and Sleep

Allison Harvey, Ph.D.

Golden Bear Sleep and Mood Research Clinic, University of California, Berkeley

Allison Harvey is a Professor of Clinical Psychology, Clinical Psychologist and Director of the Golden Bear Sleep and Mood Research Clinic at the University of California, Berkeley. … Dr. Harvey’s research interests focus on chronic insomnia, understanding the role of sleep disturbance across psychiatric disorders (particularly bipolar disorder), and sleep across development (particularly during adolescence). … Dr. Harvey’s research is funded by the National Institutes of Mental Health. The studies currently in progress are focused on sleep disturbance in teens with depression, in adults with bipolar disorder and in adults with chronic insomnia that is comorbid with depression and anxiety.

Trisha Suppes, MD, PhD

Dr. Suppes is a Professor in Psychiatry & Behavioral Science at Stanford University Medial School. She is also the Director of the Bipolar Disorders Research Program at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System. She is a recognized expert on the biology and treatment of bipolar disorder. Her areas of specific expertise include long-term treatment strategies for bipolar disorder, identification and treatment of bipolar II disorder, treatment of those with bipolar disorders and co-morbid conditions, and use of complementary medicine for bipolar disorder. Dr. Suppes has been integrally involved in numerous initiatives to improve evidence based treatment for bipolar disorders, including the Texas Medication Algorithm Project and the American Psychiatric Association guidelines for bipolar disorder. These have been widely disseminated and adopted both nationally and internationally.
